How Warmup Volume Interacts With Campaign Volume
One of the most common mistakes in cold email is not understanding how warmup and campaign volume combine. Getting this wrong leads to deliverability problems.
One of the most common mistakes in cold email is not understanding how warmup and campaign volume combine. Getting this wrong leads to deliverability problems.
The total volume equation
Your email account processes two types of outbound email: warmup emails and campaign emails. Both count toward your total daily sending activity. Email providers see both types as sends from your account — they do not distinguish between warmup and cold outreach. Example: If your warmup tool sends 20 emails per day and your campaign sends 30 emails per day, your account is processing 50 total outbound emails daily.
The safe total volume
A safe total outbound volume (warmup + campaigns) for a single Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 account is 40 to 60 emails per day. This means if your warmup is at 25 emails per day, your campaign volume should not exceed 25 to 35 emails per day from the same account.
The common mistake
Many senders set their warmup to 30 to 40 emails per day (which is fine during the initial warmup period when no campaigns are running) but forget to reduce warmup volume when campaigns begin. The combined volume exceeds safe limits and triggers spam filters.
The correct approach
During the initial warmup period (before any campaigns): Run warmup at 20 to 40 emails per day. This is the only outbound activity on the account. When campaigns begin: Reduce warmup volume to 10 to 20 emails per day. Add campaign volume of 20 to 30 per day. Total combined volume stays under 50. As campaigns scale: You may need to reduce warmup further to accommodate higher campaign volume while staying within total limits. Never drop warmup below 5 to 10 emails per day — you need ongoing positive signals.
How sending tools handle this
Some cold email tools with built-in warmup automatically coordinate volumes. Check your tool's settings to ensure warmup and campaign sends are balanced within safe limits. If you are using a separate warmup tool, you must manage this coordination manually.
