How to Set Up a Custom Tracking Domain for Cold Email
A custom tracking domain replaces the shared tracking domain your cold email tool uses by default, reducing the risk of reputation contamination from other senders.

Why custom tracking domains matter
When your cold email tool tracks opens or clicks, it uses a tracking domain. By default, this is a shared domain used by all customers of the tool. If other customers are sending spam or low-quality email, the shared tracking domain's reputation suffers — and so does your deliverability. A custom tracking domain is a subdomain of your own domain (e.g., track.yourdomain.com) used exclusively for your tracking. Its reputation is entirely under your control.
How to set up a custom tracking domain
Step 1: Choose a subdomain like track.yourdomain.com or link.yourdomain.com. Step 2: In your cold email tool's settings, find the custom tracking domain configuration. The tool will provide a CNAME record value. Step 3: Add the CNAME record to your domain's DNS, pointing your tracking subdomain to the tool's tracking server. Step 4: Wait for DNS propagation (up to 48 hours, usually faster). Step 5: Verify the setup in your cold email tool. Most tools will test the DNS and confirm the custom domain is active.
SSL for tracking domains
Ensure your custom tracking domain uses HTTPS. Most modern cold email tools handle SSL certificate provisioning automatically when you set up a custom tracking domain. Without HTTPS, links in your emails may be flagged as insecure by email clients and browsers. Should you use tracking at all? As discussed in Articles 45 and 46, tracking (both open and click) can hurt deliverability. If maximum deliverability is your priority, consider disabling tracking entirely. If you need tracking data, a custom tracking domain is the minimum safety measure. Verify your overall DNS configuration with the DNS Checker.
