Advanced DNS Configuration for Cold Email Domains
Beyond the basics of SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, advanced DNS configuration can improve your cold email deliverability.

Reverse DNS (PTR records)
Reverse DNS maps an IP address back to a domain name. When an email provider receives your email, it may perform a reverse DNS lookup on the sending IP. If the reverse DNS does not match the sending domain, it is a negative signal. For Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 users, the hosting provider manages reverse DNS — no action required.
DKIM key rotation
Periodically rotate your DKIM keys (every 6 to 12 months) to maintain cryptographic security. Generate a new DKIM key, add the new public key to DNS, enable the new key in your email provider, and remove the old key after confirming the new one is working.
DMARC reporting analysis
If you have configured DMARC with a reporting address (rua), you receive regular aggregate reports. These XML reports show authentication results across all emails sent from your domain. Use a DMARC report analyzer tool to parse these reports and identify any authentication failures.
DNS TTL (Time to Live)
TTL controls how long DNS records are cached. For cold email domains, use a moderate TTL (300 to 3600 seconds). Lower TTL allows faster updates if you need to change records quickly. Higher TTL provides more stable resolution.
CAA records
Certificate Authority Authorization (CAA) records specify which certificate authorities can issue SSL certificates for your domain. While not directly related to email, they are a security best practice for any domain you control.
