How to Use Conditional Logic in Email Sequences
Conditional sequences adapt based on prospect behavior, sending different follow-ups depending on whether the prospect opened, clicked, or replied.

What conditional logic enables
Instead of sending every prospect the same five-email sequence regardless of behavior, conditional logic branches the sequence based on engagement: If the prospect opened Email 1 but did not reply → Send Follow-up A (acknowledges their potential interest). If the prospect did not open Email 1 → Send Follow-up B (different subject line, different approach). If the prospect clicked a link → Send Follow-up C (references the content they clicked on). If the prospect replied negatively → Stop the sequence.
Why conditional sequences perform better
They are more relevant. A prospect who opened your email but did not reply is in a different mental state than one who never opened it. Addressing their specific situation increases the chance of a response.
The caveat with open tracking
Conditional logic based on opens is unreliable due to Apple Mail Privacy Protection and other tracking limitations. Use open-based conditions directionally, not as definitive signals. Reply-based conditions are reliable and should be the primary branching criteria.
Common conditional branches
Reply received → Stop sequence and notify for manual follow-up. Bounce → Stop sequence and flag for list cleaning. OOO reply → Pause sequence and resume after return date. Positive reply → Stop sequence and route to SDR for immediate follow-up. No engagement after all emails → Add to re-engagement list for future campaigns.
