How to Write Cold Email Subject Lines by Persona
Subject lines should be tailored to the prospect's role and priorities.
Subject lines should be tailored to the prospect's role and priorities.
C-suite subject lines
Keep them strategic and concise. C-suite executives scan for strategic relevance. "{{company}}'s growth in {{area}}" / "quick thought on {{strategic_priority}}" / "{{company}} + {{market_trend}}"
VP-level subject lines
Balance strategy with operational relevance. VPs care about both the big picture and execution. "{{metric}} improvement for {{company}}" / "idea for your {{department}} team" / "how {{similar_company}} solved {{challenge}}"
Director/Manager subject lines
Focus on specific, tactical relevance. Managers care about their immediate responsibilities. "{{specific_process}} at {{company}}" / "reducing {{pain_point}} by {{percentage}}" / "question about your {{specific_tool/process}}"
The seniority-length relationship
The more senior the prospect, the shorter the subject line should be. CEO subject lines: 3 to 5 words. VP subject lines: 4 to 7 words. Manager subject lines: 5 to 9 words.
Testing by persona
A/B test subject lines within each persona segment separately. What works for CTOs may not work for CMOs. Persona-specific testing produces persona-specific winners.
