Shared IP vs Dedicated IP: Which Is Better for Cold Email

The shared vs dedicated IP question comes up frequently in cold email discussions. Here is the definitive answer for cold emailers in 2026.

The shared vs dedicated IP question comes up frequently in cold email discussions. Here is the definitive answer for cold emailers in 2026.

Shared IP explained

A shared IP is used by multiple senders. With Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, you are on shared IP pools managed by Google and Microsoft respectively. Your reputation is partly influenced by other senders on the same IPs, but these providers aggressively police their networks to maintain overall quality.

Dedicated IP explained

A dedicated IP is assigned exclusively to you. No other sender shares it. You have full control over the reputation. This sounds ideal, but it comes with significant requirements.

Why dedicated IPs are NOT ideal for cold email

Dedicated IPs require consistent, high-volume sending to build and maintain reputation. If you send fewer than 50,000 emails per month, your dedicated IP will not have enough data for email providers to establish a reliable reputation. This actually hurts deliverability. Most cold emailers send 3,000 to 30,000 emails per month — not enough for a dedicated IP. At these volumes, you are better off on the shared IPs of Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, which already have strong reputations built on billions of daily messages.

When dedicated IPs make sense

Large-scale senders who consistently exceed 100,000 emails per month and have sophisticated deliverability teams to manage IP warmup and reputation. This applies to email marketing platforms and very large sales organizations, not typical cold email operations.

The recommendation for cold emailers

Use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. Benefit from their shared, high-quality IP pools. Focus your energy on domain reputation, authentication, warmup, and content quality — the factors that are both more impactful and more within your control.
