Why images hurt cold email

Images add HTML complexity that spam filters scrutinize. Emails with high image-to-text ratios are flagged as promotional content because that is exactly the pattern marketing emails follow. A cold email should look like a personal message from one professional to another — and personal emails do not include branded banners, product screenshots, or infographics. Images are hosted on external servers. When the email client loads the image, it connects to that server, which can be flagged for reputation issues. Some email clients block images by default, meaning your carefully designed visual does nothing anyway. Images increase email size, which can trigger additional filtering. Plain text cold emails are typically 2-5 KB. Add a single image and you can jump to 50-200 KB, which changes how email providers classify your message.

What to do instead

Send plain text cold emails with zero images. If you need to share something visual — a chart, a screenshot, a product demo — mention it in your email and offer to share it in a reply. This creates engagement (they reply to request it) and avoids deliverability penalties. For case studies or data points, describe them in text. "We helped three companies like yours reduce churn by 30%" is more compelling and more deliverable than an embedded chart showing the same information.

The exception

Email signatures sometimes include company logos. While a small logo in your signature is generally low-risk, it still adds HTML and an external image load. For maximum deliverability, use a text-only signature: your name, title, company name, and optionally a website URL. Keep your cold emails lean, fast, and personal. No images, no exceptions.
