What a feedback loop is

When a recipient clicks "Mark as Spam" on your email, the email provider can notify you about the complaint. This notification comes through a feedback loop. The FBL sends you a report containing the email that was complained about, allowing you to identify the recipient and remove them from your list.

Major provider FBLs

Microsoft/Outlook: JMRP (Junk Mail Reporting Program). Sign up to receive reports when Outlook users mark your email as junk. Yahoo: CFL (Complaint Feedback Loop). Sign up through Yahoo's postmaster tools. Gmail: Does not offer a traditional FBL. Instead, complaint data is aggregated in Google Postmaster Tools as your spam rate metric.

Why FBLs matter for cold email

FBLs give you direct visibility into who is complaining and which emails are triggering complaints. This data helps you identify problematic campaigns, segments, or copy before the damage compounds.

Setting up FBLs

FBLs require you to set up specific email addresses and register with each provider. The process varies by provider. For cold emailers using Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, the most practical approach is monitoring spam rates through Google Postmaster Tools and checking the blacklist checker regularly for any reputation impacts.
