Advanced Deliverability: Understanding Email Provider Algorithms
Email provider filtering algorithms are complex machine learning systems that evaluate hundreds of signals. Understanding the key signals helps you optimize your cold email strategy.
Email provider filtering algorithms are complex machine learning systems that evaluate hundreds of signals. Understanding the key signals helps you optimize your cold email strategy.
The primary signal categories
Sender reputation signals: Your domain age, domain reputation, IP reputation, authentication status, and historical sending patterns. These are the foundation — without a strong sender reputation, no amount of content optimization matters. Engagement signals: How recipients interact with your emails. Opens, replies, forwards, and "not spam" actions are positive. Deletes, ignores, and spam reports are negative. Engagement is measured over time, creating a rolling average that defines your expected engagement level. Content signals: The text, structure, and elements of your email. Spam trigger words, HTML complexity, link presence, and similarity to known spam patterns are all evaluated. Sending behavior signals: Volume patterns, sending speed, consistency, and time-of-day patterns. Sudden changes in any of these trigger scrutiny. Recipient signals: The specific recipient's past behavior with email. If this recipient frequently marks cold emails as spam, providers apply extra caution to unsolicited messages in their inbox.
How these signals interact
The algorithm does not look at any single signal in isolation. A spam trigger word in an email from a sender with excellent reputation and strong engagement may be delivered to the inbox. The same word from a new sender with no reputation may trigger spam placement. Context matters.
The optimization hierarchy
Reputation → Engagement → Sending behavior → Content. Fix issues in this order. Optimizing content while your reputation is damaged is like rearranging furniture on a sinking ship.
