The testing hierarchy

Test the variables that have the highest impact first. In order of impact on reply rates: Targeting (who you email) — highest impact Offer/value proposition (what you propose) Subject line (whether they open) Opening line (whether they keep reading) Body copy (whether they are persuaded) CTA (whether they take action) Send timing (when they receive it) — lowest relative impact

The testing protocol

Define the hypothesis: "We believe that referencing recent funding events in the opening line will increase positive reply rates by 2 percentage points compared to referencing job postings." Design the test: Two variants, identical except for the opening line. Same subject line, same CTA, same prospect segment. Determine sample size: Minimum 200 sends per variant for directional results. 500+ for statistical significance. Run the test: Split the prospect list randomly between variants. Send simultaneously to eliminate timing as a variable. Analyze results: After 7 days (allowing time for replies), compare positive reply rates. Use a statistical significance calculator to determine if the difference is meaningful. Document and apply: Record the result in your testing log. Apply the winner to future campaigns. Move to the next test.

The testing log

Maintain a running document of all tests: date, hypothesis, variants, sample sizes, results, statistical significance, and decision. This log becomes an invaluable institutional knowledge asset over time.
